Some elopements stay with you long after the last image is delivered. This was one of those days. This elopement at Ridgecliff, near Akaroa, was my biggest elopement so far – not just in scale, but in feeling. Three full hours of coverage, the most guests I’ve ever photographed at an elopement, and yet… it still felt deeply intimate and intentional.
As a Christchurch elopement photographer, I see so many different ways couples choose to celebrate their love. This day was a beautiful reminder that elopements don’t have to be rushed, tiny, or minimal to be meaningful. When done with care, they can feel expansive, immersive, and full – full of laughter, music, movement, and space to truly live the day.
Creating Space to Truly Live the Day
One of the things that made this Ridgecliff elopement so special was time. Instead of squeezing everything into a tight window, C & N intentionally planned their day to unfold slowly. Three hours of coverage might not sound like much compared to a traditional wedding, but for an elopement, it was everything. It gave us room to breathe. To explore. To let moments happen naturally.
We began with a full hour dedicated entirely to portraits, and it was such a good idea! No rushing. No pressure. Just the two of them, surrounded by cliffs, sea air, and that unmistakable Akaroa calm.
As an Akaroa elopement photographer, I know how powerful this landscape is – and Ridgecliff takes it to another level.

Ridgecliff: A Venue That Shapes the Feeling of the Day
Many couples planning their elopement from Christchurch are drawn to Akaroa for its landscapes and calm energy. And this day was a beautiful reminder of how much your location matters. Your venue doesn’t just provide a backdrop. I deeply believe that it creates the atmosphere, the rhythm, the feeling of your wedding day, just as much as your personalities do.
Ridgecliff is one of those places that instantly changes the energy of everything around it. Tucked away near Akaroa, in the heart of a family farm, it feels wild and refined at the same time.
As a Canterbury elopement photographer, I’m always searching for locations that offer variety, depth, and emotional pull, and Ridgecliff delivers all of that, and more. I’d been wanting to photograph an elopement there for months. The moment I arrived, I was completely captivated by the beauty of the place. Every turn revealed another stunning spot to shoot. Cliffs, open space, beautiful gardens, a cottage with character, layered landscapes, soft grass, dramatic drops into the ocean. It’s the kind of venue that invites exploration and rewards curiosity.

Thoughtful Planning, Meaningful Experience
C & N thought of everything – not in a flashy way, but in a deeply thoughtful, human way.
Their vision wasn’t about impressing. It was about creating an experience where everyone felt relaxed, included, and genuinely happy to be there. That intention flowed through every part of the day. As a Christchurch elopement photographer, I often see couples prioritise how their day feels over how it looks – and that’s when the magic really happens. This elopement was the perfect example of that philosophy in action.

A Heartfelt ceremony in the Cottage Gardens
After portraits, guests gathered for the ceremony. The setting was so lovely! Old wooden chairs, low tables on which were placed pretty vases filled with fresh flowers, the characterful house on one side and the trees and hills on the other.
There was no need for elaborate décor. Nature did the heavy lifting. The ceremony itself was heartfelt, emotional, and beautifully grounded. As an Akaroa elopement photographer, moments like this are why I love what I do. When couples choose a place that resonates with them, everything feels more aligned. There was laughter, tears, and many memories shared. The perfect recipe for a successful ceremony that truly reflected you.

Music, Ice Cream, and Joy-Filled Celebration
One of my favourite parts of this elopement was how relaxed and joy-filled the reception felt!
C & N created a space for connection and enjoyment. A live band played while the guests could enjoy some ice cream. That was when we slipped away for couple photos – heading a little higher up on the cliffs, where the views opened even wider. Those quiet moments away were something special. No audience. No expectations. Just the two of them, wrapped in the landscape. Well, in the end we weren’t as alone as we thought because we met some sheep on the way, with whom we couldn’t resist posing.
As a Christchurch elopement photographer, I love when couples build natural pauses into their day like this. It allows guests to enjoy themselves, and it gives the couple space to reconnect, breathe, and take it all in. And I always encourage couples to build space into their day for moments like this. They’re grounding. They’re intimate. And they often hold the deepest emotion (and the best memories).

Why Vendors Matter More Than You Think
This day was a beautiful reminder of how much your vendors matter. The people you choose to surround yourselves with don’t just provide services — they shape the entire experience of your day.
From the tone of the ceremony to the energy of the reception, every vendor plays a role in how everything feels. C & N chose vendors who aligned with their vision: relaxed, thoughtful, and deeply professional.
As a Canterbury elopement photographer, I see firsthand how the right team can elevate a day – making everything flow effortlessly, without stress or tension. And that’s exactly what happened here.

Why Akaroa Is Perfect for Elopements
As an Akaroa elopement photographer, I can say with full confidence that this region offers something truly special.
Akaroa elopements allow couples to step away from the noise and expectations of traditional weddings, without sacrificing beauty or experience. The landscapes are varied and dramatic. The energy is calm. Places like Ridgecliff offer a sense of seclusion while still being accessible.

For couples looking for something intentional, relaxed, and deeply connected to nature, I will tell you this: Akaroa is an incredible choice!
Eloping in Canterbury: A Meaningful Alternative
Elopements in Canterbury continue to evolve, and days like this show just how expansive they can be.
As a Canterbury elopement photographer, I’ve watched couples redefine what a wedding day can look like. Elopements are no longer about doing less – they’re about doing what matters most.
More time to slow down, deeper presence in every moment, and a day filled with real meaning. Elopements like this one are a perfect example of that shift.
This elopement at Ridgecliff will stay with me for a long time. It was a reminder of why I do what I do. Why I love being an elopement photographer in Christchurch, Akaroa, or in Canterbury in general.
It wasn’t just about beautiful images (though the beauty was undeniable). It was about creating space to truly live the day, surrounded by people you love, in a place that feels like you. For couples searching for a Christchurch elopement photographer who values space, emotion, and experience, days like this are what I love most.
If you’re planning your elopement at Ridgecliff, in Akaroa, Christchurch or anywhere across Canterbury, and you’re looking for someone who will capture your day with soul and honesty – I’d love to connect! Let’s create something meaningful together.
