Engagement Photography in Christchurch on the hills

Some evenings are quietly unforgettable. This engagement session on the Hills in Christchurch unfolded high above the city, where the light lingers a little longer. When I look back on this session, I remember the way they smiled at each other. Not the kind of smile you give for the camera, but the kind that says this is real. That kind of moment is what I live for as a photographer.

The Experience of Being Photographed

Let’s begin here: being photographed can feel vulnerable. I know that deeply as a Christchurch engagement photographer, because I’ve been on the other side of the lens myself. That’s why I’ve shaped my sessions to feel less like a photoshoot and more like a pause in time. There are no stiff poses. No pressure to perform. No expectations to look a certain way. Just you, your person, the landscape, and me, there to guide you gently, hold space, and notice the quiet, beautiful moments as they unfold. From the moment this couple arrived for their engagement session on the Hills, I could tell they were open-hearted. A little nervous at first, like most people, but within minutes, the awkwardness softened into joy. We laughed, walked and found patches of wild grass where the light wrapped around them like a blanket. And slowly, they forgot about the camera. That’s always the goal.

What an Engagement Session Actually Is

So many people think of engagement sessions as “just” a pre-wedding shoot. A box to tick. But here’s what I see: An engagement session is a love letter to right now. To this fleeting chapter between saying yes and saying “I do.” It’s a moment to freeze time and remember how it felt to be wildly in love before marriage begins. And more than anything, it’s a chance to celebrate you, not as wedding clients, but as a couple in love. It’s a session about connection, how you laugh together, how you hold hands, how you look at each other when you think no one else is watching. It’s about letting go of expectation, stepping into the moment, and creating something together that’s honest and beautifully you.

What the Engagement Session Looked Like

We started with soft walking prompts: holding hands, brushing shoulders, talking to each other. I asked them to tell each other what they loved most about the other. Not loud, not for the camera, just whispered between them. From there, it flowed. The cuddles came naturally. The little in-between gestures, the way they reached for their shirt, how they tucked their hair behind their ear… Those are the golden details I never want to miss. Then came the hands. One of my favourite parts of any engagement session is the close-up of their hands, especially when a ring is involved. I love showing the tenderness in the way fingers intertwine, how an engagement ring glints in the golden light. There’s so much story in hands alone. As the sun began to set behind the hills, we paused. The warm light touched their skin and painted the grass gold. I took a step back and let them have a moment. No words. Just the wind, the light, and the feeling of being exactly where they were meant to be.

The Landscape

The Hills around Christchurch are endlessly inspiring. They’re quiet but grand. Humble but cinematic. There’s something wild and grounding about them. I shot several engagement sessions on the Hills in Christchurch, not because it’s perfect in the traditional sense, but because it lets people breathe. The openness invites stillness. The wildness invites play. It’s the kind of place where people naturally drop into themselves. And the light… On a good evening, it wraps everything in this soft, golden haze. It’s the kind of light you don’t need to fight. You just let it fall and follow it.

Why You Should Do an Engagement Session

Even if you’re not planning a big wedding, even if you don’t usually like being photographed, even if you’re a little shy: this kind of session is worth it. Here’s why:

1. It captures this version of you. Life moves fast. Planning a wedding or an elopement is exciting, but it can also feel like a whirlwind. An engagement session presses pause. It captures the now: the joy, the anticipation, the love before the next big chapter begins.

2. It helps you feel more at ease on your wedding day. Most people I photograph aren’t models. They’ve never had professional photos taken, and they worry about looking awkward. An engagement session is a beautiful way to build trust and comfort. By the time your wedding arrives, being photographed feels familiar and safe.

3. It’s fun! Truly. It’s not about performing. It’s about playing. Laughing. Exploring. Feeling the wind in your hair and the sun on your skin while you hold your person close. It’s a date, really. Just with me third-wheeling in the best way.

4. It gives you photos that feel like you. You’ll get images that you can frame, print, share, and remember not just how you looked, but how you felt. And that’s what matters most.

My Approach

As an engagement photographer in Christchurch and a Canterbury engagement photographer, I’m not here to direct every moment. I’m here to notice. To feel the energy between you and help it shine. I’ll guide you, of course. I won’t leave you wondering what to do. But my prompts are gentle. Natural. Built around real emotion, movement, and connection. I care deeply about creating a space where you can be yourself. Where you feel safe, held, and seen, exactly as you are. Whether you’re playful or quiet, romantic or goofy, reserved or expressive: there’s no wrong way to love, and there’s no wrong way to show up. I’ll meet you there.

What to Wear for Your Engagement Session

A little side note, because I get this question often! Wear something that feels like you. Something comfortable, something you can move in, something you feel good in. Soft, neutral colours tend to photograph beautifully in the landscape. For an engagement session on the Hills in Christchurch, think earthy tones, whites, creams, rust, sage, or dusty pinks. Avoid bold patterns or logos, but above all: wear what makes you feel like your best, most relaxed self. And remember: it’s not about dressing up. It’s about being present.

Every Story Deserves to be captured

I also want to take a moment to say this clearly: I photograph every kind of love. Queer love. Same-sex couples. Interracial couples. Plus-size love. Disabled love. Quiet love. Wild love. All of it. Everyone is welcome here.

Love is love! And I believe with my whole heart that every story deserves to be seen, celebrated, and remembered. When you work with me, know that I’m not just capturing your love. I’m holding it with care, respect, and the honour it deserves.

Let’s capture your love story

If you’re engaged, or even just wildly in love and want to celebrate it: let’s do it! Let’s head to the Hills or the beach or your favourite hidden spot. Let’s make a little magic together. Your story is worthy of being told. Not just on your wedding day, but in all the quiet moments in between. And when the sun dips behind the hills, and the last light kisses your skin, I’ll be there, clicking the shutter one last time, knowing we’ve just created something that will last forever.
